Manchester College

Our society is disintegrating primarily because it has lost its sense of goal, and because its knowledge of skills and tools for the control of the physical world has outrun its ability to understand and control human relations....This necessitates a study of the techniques of peacemaking, international relations, and the long view of history.

- Gladdys Muir, 1947, founder of Peace Studies at Manchester College.

The force generated by nonviolence is infinitely greater than the force of all the arms invented by man’s ingenuity.

- Mahatma Gandhi

I’m so honored to be here. I’m so honored to be alive at such a miraculous time in history. I’m so moved by what is going on in our world today. Never before in the history of the world has there been a global, visible, public, viable, open dialogue and conversation about the very legitimacy of war . . . Now there are two superpowers: the United States and the merging, surging voice of the people of the world.

- Dr. Robert Muller, Chancellor Emeritus of the University of Peace in Costa Rica

Dr. Jo Young Switzer
Manchester College President

This age can be a time of new beginnings, when we finally recognize that cycles of violence must be broken by innovative responses of a different kind.

Peace Studies at Manchester College explores the exciting frontiers of nonviolent alternatives to conflict. Whether in our personal lives or the international arena, we search for an alternative choice of action that does not tear down, but works to build up positive relationships with adversaries. We resolve not to accept injustice, but to actively oppose it without taking life or forfeiting freedom, either our own or that of others.
