Plowshares - A Peace Studies Collaborative of Earlham, Goshen and Manchester Colleges

Manchester students proudly welcome guests to campus.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

Lilly Plowshares Grant
Mini-grants for Students

The Lilly Plowshares Grant provides funds to Manchester College students who want to engage the broad issues of peace and justice outside the classroom. All students are encouraged to apply regardless of major. The proposed experience need not relate to the applicant’s major.

Grants of up to $3000 are available in 2002-2003 for students in any academic field at Manchester College whose proposals are selected for research, travel, conferences, or internships that focus on peace and justice. With the sponsorship of a faculty member, students may seek better knowledge of or practical experience in fields such as nonviolence, conflict mediation, economic justice, racial justice, sustainable development, eco-justice, peace and the arts, and political and social change, to name just a few.

How to apply

  1. In one or two single-spaced pages, write a proposal that includes the information requested below:
Describe your proposed project and tell how it can enlarge your understanding of peace and justice. For instance, how will travel expand your worldview? How will an internship help you understand a social problem? How will a training event improve your skills in dealing with conflict and prepare you vocationally?

  2. Provide a simple budget showing how the funds will be spent, including travel, lodging, meals, and fees.

  3. Demonstrate your financial need. What sources of income do you or your family have to support your travel? How much debt do you already have? What is the minimum amount of money you will need, below which you cannot afford to travel?

  4. Include an academic resume. Career Services will provide assistance in developing a professional academic resume.

  5. Create a plan for how you will share what you learn with the college community, either through class presentations, presentations to student groups, or media reports. Carry out your plan at the end of your project.

  6. Obtain the signature of a sponsoring faculty member.

Proposals are due by November 1, 2002, for awards in January and Spring 2003, and by April 1, 2003, for awards in Summer and Fall 2003. Submit proposals to Julie Garber, Plowshares Director, at MC Box Plowshares. The Registrar and the Plowshares Advisory Committee will review proposals, giving priority to applications that show financial need, and applications that promise to broaden the educational experience, contribute to the understanding of peace and justice, and have a lasting impact on learning.

Address questions to Julie Garber, Plowshares Director, at jlgarber@manchester.edu or by phone at 982-5026.
