Goshen College, Lilly Plowshares Grant Call for Applications, 2004-2005
Plowshares Mini-grants for Students and Student Organizations
The Lilly Plowshares Grant provides funds to Goshen College students
and student organizations who want to enhance their education through
learning experiences beyond the classroom, experiences that engage them
in issues of peace and justice. All students and student organizations
are encouraged to apply.
Six to ten competitive grants of up to $2000 are available in
2004-2005 for students in any academic field at Goshen College
whose proposals are selected for research, travel, conferences,
or internships for peace and justice. With the sponsorship of
a faculty member, students and student organizations may seek
better knowledge of, or practical experience in, fields such as
nonviolence, conflict transformation, economic justice, racial
justice, sustainable development, eco-justice, peace and the arts,
and political and social change, to name just a few. Priority
will be given to:
- Applications that broaden the educational experience and have lasting impact on learning
- Initiatives and opportunities which have the potential to impact the larger campus community
- New initiatives and opportunities. See the attached evaluation matrix for grant criteria.
How to apply
In 1-2 single-spaced pages, write a proposal that includes information requested in the following four points:
-
Describe your proposed project and project goals. Tell how the project enlarges your education at Goshen College. In particular, tell how the proposed project strengthens your own understanding of peace and justice in the broad sense.
-
Provide a simple budget for how the funds will be spent. Students and student organizations will be encouraged to raise part of their own funds through other means. Included in the budget should be the percentage of other funds being used and the plan for obtaining those funds.
-
Create a plan for how you will share what you learned with the college community, either through class presentations, presentations to student groups, or media reports. Carry out your plan at the end of your project.
-
Obtain the signature of a sponsoring faculty member.
Review process
Within two weeks of completing the proposed event students will be responsible for submitting a Review of 1-2 single-spaced pages . Failure to file a Review may result in the loss of future funding to those students or student organizations which received the initial funding. The Review should be a reflection on the following three points:
- How did the project meet your proposed goals?
- What might you do differently next time?
- What went well?
Proposals for the Fall Semester are due by October15th. Proposals for the Spring Semester are due by January 15th. Proposals for the Summer are due by April 1st. Awards will be announced within one week of submission date.
