Call for Faculty Proposals

The Lilly Plowshares Grant seeks to strengthen peace studies across the curriculum at Earlham College. It provides for $15,000 in grants each year for:

• faculty research
• course development
• teaching enrichment

where these activities are broadly related to peace, justice, and reconciliation.Faculty in all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Proposals may be written in cooperation with other faculty or students, or they may be considered alone. Each faculty member may request up to $3500.

Due Dates & Proposal Process

Proposals for 2003-04 are due on April 1st, September 30th, and December 1st, 2003. Proposals should be submitted electronically to plowshares@ earlham.edu by the deadline indicated above. The Plowshares Advisory Committee will review all proposals and approximately $5,000 in grants will be awarded at each review.

Priority will be given to proposals that have lasting impact on the Earlham community, and that provide the most value for the grant requested. The degree of detail and explanation in the proposal should be related to the size of the grant requested.

Proposal Guidelines

To apply for a Plowshares faculty development grant, please write a brief proposal addressing the following points:

1. Describe your proposed project and tell how it contributes to the educational experience at Earlham College. In particular, tell how the proposed project strengthens your own understanding of peace and justice in the broad sense and helps prepare you or others to be more effective advocates for peace and justice.

2. Provide a simple budget of the total funds are for the project and how they will be spent. Please indicate what funds from other sources will be involved in the project. Joint projects are often the most attractive.

3. How many members of the Earlham community do you expect to benefit from the project and the funds?

4. What collaboration, if any, is there with Manchester or Goshen College? Dean Johnson <deanjj@goshen.edu> and Julie Garber <jlgarber@manchester.edu> are the Plowshares Directors at these campuses who can help you make connections with faculty or students at those colleges.

5. Describe how you will share what you learned with the college community, either through class presentations, presentations to student or other groups, media reports, or publications.

6. We need at least a 1-page summary report of this project for our records within 15 days of the completion. Are you willing to provide that report?

7. If there are several people involved, please give us the name and contact information for the contact person responsible for this project and responsible for the report.

8. Please consider the environmental impact of each project and how it can contribute to awareness and responsibility for the environment at Earlham.
